Best Shooter of 2012

Point a gun and fire it, that is the core of a shooter. They have evolved to to be more than that now. They have involved storylines, branching characters, and fancier guns! This year was full of games that have improved the genre, and here are our choices for best shooter of the year.

Farcry 3
Borderlands 2
Halo 4
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

And the winner is Borderlands 2. With 4 different classes, a diverse leveling system, hilarious dialog, and more bullets than the US Military then game is a real joy to play. It works in both a single player and multiplayer environment and will give you hours of enjoyment.

Best MMO of 2012

MMO's are quickly dominating the gaming market, or at least the free-to-play part of the market. As such there are now a number of MMO's to choose from, but despite this we have have chosen a few nominate for MMO of the year.

Guild Wars 2
Planetside 2
World of Warcraft: Mists of Panderia

And the winner is Guild Wars 2 (like that is any surprise if you listen to the podcast). The interactive combat and way they work questing makes the game really fun to play. Add that to the no subscription play model and this is an MMO that anyone should pick up.

Best Racing Game of 2012

*Note, don't let the posted name fool you, IrishPride wrote this one*

Best racing game is one of the easiest selections we have to make here at The Gameslave.  It's not because we all easily agree on a winner, but no one here at TGS really plays racing games besides myself.  I'll be the first to admit, I'm definitely not a hard core racing gamer, but I do own a 360 steering wheel and have sunk numerous hours into past racing games.  For me, the clear cut winner for best racing game is Borderlands 2.  The cars in BL2 handle like a dream and you can launch exploding barrels, what's not to love? Our nominees are:

Forza Horizon
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Monster High: Skultimate Roller Maze (We did not play many racing games this year)
Borderlands 2

Okay, in all seriousness, the best racing game of 2012 is Forza Horizon and frankly it's not even close.

The Forza series strikes a perfect balance between real life racing simulation and arcade simulation.  I like tweaking my cars to perform better in races, but still like having the arcade feel of racing.  If I wanted true to life racing, I would go to my local race track and do it myself.  What makes Forza Horizon awesome is that it takes what made the previous Forza games great and amplifies it with open world racing.  Not only is it open world racing, it's based on the greatest state in the union, Colorado.  There are an abundant of races to partake in as well as some cool "boss battle" races where you race against airplanes, hot air balloons and other crazy vehicles.  There is also a pretty cool story that goes along with all the racing.  And hell, if you don't want to race, you don't have to.  Just take one of your exotic cars out for a spin on crisp Colorado night.

Best Platformer of 2012

Many of the games we loved from our childhood can be considered platformers. Run, jump and don't die are the main components of this game. As time has moved on we see less platformers coming out, but they do still exist. Here are nominees for best platformer.

Trine 2
Super Mario Bros U
New Super Mario Bros 2

Ok, we had hard time thinking of a bunch of platformers that came out and we played. This won't be the only category with this problem. But our choice this year is Super Mario Bros U. The main thing that gave this game the edge is the fact that up to five people can play at once. Sure it gets really freaking chaotic at that point and becomes nearly impossible to play without at least one person dying in each level. But despite all that the game is a ton of fun.

Best Strategy Game of 2012

The strategy game, the home of forward thinkers. They must know what their opponent it planning and move ahead of them. They have to manage defending their people while at the same time annihilating their foe. The nominees for this category are as follows.

Orcs Must Die 2
Faster Then Light
Civilization V: Gods and Kings
XCOM: Enemy Unknown

And the winner is XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Rampage, should he get back to me, will explain why.

Best RPG of 2012

Ahh role-playing, is there anything better than pretending to be someone you are not? To create a character and mold them to your personal liking? Whether you want to be a spell slinging mage to or a sniper rifle wielding soldier you get to choose. Our nominees for best RPG of the year are as follows.

Kingdoms of Amular
Mass Effect 3
Pokemon Black and White
Torchlight
Diablo III
Borderlands 2

And the winner is Mass Effect 3. Say what you will about how the game ended (which I did not mind by the way) the game was good. It was fun and maintained what we enjoyed about the other Mass Effect games. You could customize your class to fit your play style, and if you were fortunate enough to have played Mass Effect 2 on the same system you played Mass Effect 3 then your character choices and character levels mover over to the new game. Whether you love or hate the story, the game itself was great.

Best Action/Adventure Game of 2012

Action/Adventure games are arguably a cornerstone in the gaming world. A number of games can fall into this category pretty easily. But you don’t care about that, without further delay I give you our nominees.

Darksiders 2
Max Payne 3
Dishonered
Assassins Creed 3
Borderlands 2

And the winner is Dishonored.

With its inventive, and possibly game breaking mechanics Dishonored was a gamble for Bethesda. It was one of the few new IPs to make this list and it was a success for them. From the multiple path levels to the different ways to deal with enemies you might argue that almost no two people had the same experience in Dishonored. Even if you played the same path in the game the way you played it could be very different. With this in mind we are proud to give Dishonored best Action / Adventure game of 2012.

The PS4 was told to be revealed at E3 2013, but looks like we might be getting a sneak preview of the new console earlier.

“Wall Street Journal reports that this event is going to be about the PlayStation 4and indeed will be revealed”.

So I we have about 3 weeks to go for this event, you excited? Below is a video teaser of event on what Sony is planning.

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai had indicated that the PlayStation 4 might not be as ready to launch right along with the highly anticipated Xbox 720, code name Durango. I guess we will have to wait and see.
